If you are turning 65 years old and plan on going on Medicare there are things you need to know.

  • Your Initial Enrollment Period is 3 months before your 65th birthday, your 65th birthday month, and 3 months after your 65th birthday.
  • You may have to wait to sign up and pay a monthly late enrollment penalty if you do not sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period.
  • If you’re turning 65 you are not collecting Social Security, you must sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B.

Do you plan to continue working and keep your group health insurance?

  • You need to make sure your group insurance is creditable coverage.
  • You need to speak to your human resources department and ask if you should go on Medicare Part A.
  • When you plan on leaving your group health insurance, you need to get a letter from the company showing you have had creditable coverage.

Do you have Medicare and have moved or will be moving?

  • You need to tell your Medicare Insurance Company the month before or within two months after your move to continue to be covered.
  • You need to notify Social Security of your address change. You can do this online at Social Security Change of Address.
